How Our Brain Works: Brief Summary

What does handedness have to do with how our brain works? Well first, we need to know a little bit of background information about our brain. Our brain is split up into two halves called cerebral hemispheres that look alike, yet are not exactly alike. The brain is "cross-wired", which means that the left hemisphere controls the movement of right side of the body, and the right hemisphere controls movement of the left side of the body, which is called the motor cortex. So our left hand is controlled by the right side of the brain, and our right hand is controlled by the left. Most of our brain's different structures, lobes, and organs have elements in both left and right hemispheres, as you can see in the image to your left. The corpus callosum, a thick, flat bundle of nerve tissues, connects the hemispheres and allows them to communicate as a whole instead of as two "half-brains".
